Varanasi as an educational destination

The city of Varanasi popularly known as Benares or Banaras or Kashi, is located on the left (west) bank of the River Ganga (Ganges) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Varanasi is considered as a holy city in Hinduism because more than 1, 000, 000 pilgrims visit the city each year.

Apart from this, the city is well known for its education system.  The city is a site of three public universities. Banaras Hindu University that includes the Institute of Technology and the Institute of Medical sciences is among the 3 largest residential universities in the globe having more than 128 teaching departments.
Besides this, there are other two universities in the city as well that is Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

There are many colleges under these esteemed universities that aim at providing quality education in various streams like Science, Commerce, Humanities etc. You can a variety of colleges in the city such as:

• Engineering colleges
• Information Technology colleges
• Medical colleges and
• Other institutes

Apart from this, there are many government as well as private schools in the city that are either affiliated to ICSE, CBSE or the State board. Most private schools in the city are English medium, whereas government schools of the city focus on both English as well as Hindi language.

Under the 10 +2 plan, after completing their secondary education, most students enrol themselves in a 2 year junior college or in the schools with a higher secondary facility.

Most students choose from one of the three streams i.e. liberal arts, science or commerce, though vocational streams are also available here. After completing the required coursework, student may enrol themselves in the general or professional degree programs.

People from Uttar Pradesh as well as Bihar come to Benaras Hindu University’s institute of medical sciences for treatment. 80 percent of its medical facilities are provided by the private sectors.
