The Educational System in Ladakh

In 1988, SECMOL was founded in Ladakh with one primary objective, i.e. to improve its system of education.

School Education in Ladakh

Since the implementation of ‘Operation New Hope’, primary education system in government schools has been seriously overhauled. The program has brought about a revolution in the educational system of this area, especially in remote villages.

Where, in the year 1998, more than 95% of the students failed the matriculate exams, around 50% passed in the year 2006.

A ‘Ladakh Specific’ educational curriculum has been introduced by the government. SECMOL has gone to the lengths of introducing books, specially made for Ladakhi children as they aren’t able to understand regular school books with examples of thing and places alien to them.

Under the new system of school education, primary school classes use English as their primary medium of instruction. The books have been made equally understandable.

The Local and Central Government initiatives included designing and building a residential school in Ladakh. This was accomplished in the year 2001.

Relevant steps have been taken to improve the system of teacher transfers. However, the reforms have faced serious resistance from teacher groups and communities.

Higher Education in Ladakh

Ladakh has no institutes of higher education to its credit.
