Lakshadweep as an educational hub
The traditional form of education in Lakshadweep was confined to the teaching of the Quran and certain elements of the Islamic theology in various schools that were attached to the mosques.
Those schools were known as Madrasas. The Madrasas still function side by side even after Lakshadweep got recognition of a Union territory.
The current system of school education in the city is well- developed. The city has got decent number of government schools as well as private schools. Most of them are either affiliated to Central Board of Secondary education (CBSE) or ICSE.
Students from different parts of Kerala come and pursue education from the city.
As far as pursuing higher education in the city is concerned, Lakshadweep is blessed with various graduate colleges that offer courses on the subjects like commerce, arts, science etc.
Besides this, the city has a few reputed engineering colleges, Medical colleges, I.T colleges as well as other institutes.
Till now the city had no institution for higher education and the students had to go to the mainland in order to pursue their studies. But now the territory has reputed colleges like Jawaharlal Nehru College, which is the first of its kind in the territory.
One can mark the improvement in the literacy rate of the city by seeing growth in the literacy rate, which was just 15 per cent in 1951, 23.27 percent in 1961, 43.66 percent in 1971 and the figures today has rose to 60.4 percent.
